WHAT IS CONSERVATION?

CONSERVATION CAN'T WAIT!!!

Conservation is a committment to the wise use of our natural resources. It means that we must act to replenish what we have taken from our environment, so that we sustain the resources that are vital to the survival of life on earth.

Our future doesn't have to repeat the past. Changes are already beginning to happen. There is a growing awareness of personal environmental responsibility. We must work together to make a difference for the future of animals, plants and their wild habitats. Untimately, their survival affects the quality of our own lives. There is still time for change. But we must act now - conservation can't wait!

WHY SHOULD WE CONSERVE?

Living with conservation in mind means examining your relationship with the environment and wildlife. When we realise we have the power to destroy species, we can recognise our responsibility to protect conservation of the speciesthem. Conservation doesn't  mean we have to stop using our natural resources. It means we must learn to use them today with tomorrow in mind. For economic as well as esthetic reasons, the preservation of the earth's diveristy of plants, animals and their wild habitats is an investment in our own future. Apart from this we have to tackle "Global Warming" Conserving our resources means we are contributing less to the pollution of the planet, carbon monoxide in the air and leaving a future legacy to our children. And to the threatened wildlife such as the "Mary River Turtle. Cute guy isn't he. So what are you going to do. Sit in your gas guzzling SUV and say "were has all the wildlife gone. You Know, I remeber seeing a picture of a young mother standing outside her home with a caption of her complaining what the noise of the jackhammers from the nearby construction site might do to her unborn child. What was she doing while complaining? Puffing away on a nicotine stick. This is the same unthinking thoughts that we have when we complain about the price of petrol we are putting into our huge SUV's (we really need the space man) When we would only have to pay half the price if we had a more sensible car.

CONSERVING RESOURCES

Conserving resources to conserve wildlife, recycling, composting, backyard wildlife, saving water, using less water, and keeping it clean, and being energywise is some of the things we can do to conserve resources. It is up to you! (and me)

How Big is Your Footprint?

No, you don’t need a ruler to figure it out…We’re talking about ecological footprints. Your ecological footprint is a measurement of just what sort of impact you, personally, are having on your environment.

There isn’t any way to go through life without having some impact on the Earth.  Humans need to use earth’s resources for even the most basic lifestyle. We need certain things like water and plants to stay alive.  We use some substances like iron or wood for shelter, tools, and a variety of other necessities.

Americans are known around the world for living big- big cars, big meals, and big buildings. But all those big items need a lot of upkeep- bigger cars use more gas; big meals often end in more waste and trash; and bigger buildings mean more raw materials to build them and using more gas or oil to heat them.

Using the Earth’s resources is not a bad thing, but wasting them is. It’s important to be conscious of the ways you, personally, are having an impact. There are so many things we do every day out of habit or because it saves three seconds of time that have a big impact on our environment.

Many people think that there’s not really anything that they can do to help conservation efforts. Maybe you’re thinking “I can’t stop the loggers from cutting down trees,” or “I can’t help it if my parents don’t buy a hybrid car”. Just because those are the high profile environmentalist issues that you are hearing about on the news, doesn’t mean they are the only issues out there. All it takes from a person is a little thought and a willingness to exchange old, familiar habits for new ones.

If every single individual followed the R’s of resource conservation - Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle - we’d be spending less and living in a more beautiful world.
